Hamilton Automation Specialist

The Hamilton Automation Specialist will become an essential member of the Laboratory Automation Team, who have responsibility to develop, deploy and maintain automated laboratory systems to support the GMI Genomics Centre’s rapidly evolving workflows and processes. This matrixed team works across relevant areas of the business and comprises scientists, data informaticians, IT specialists, engineers, lean six sigma and quality specialists as required to execute laboratory projects that are fit for purpose and capable of scaling.

This matrixed team works across relevant areas of the business and comprises scientists, data informaticians, IT specialists, engineers, lean six sigma and quality specialists as required to execute laboratory projects that are fit for purpose and capable of scaling.

The Hamilton Automation Specialist will be responsible for the continuous improvement of laboratory processing workflow efficiency and effectiveness, implementing automated systems to support scientific workflows such as whole genome sequencing, whole exome sequencing, RNAseq, methylation and genotyping etc. The successful candidate will work closely with the team lead and end users to ensure the introduction of new/modified protocols occurs in a planned and managed way that pre-empts potential complications and causes minimal disruption to processing.

Examples of the instrumentation involved includes liquid handlers, automated extraction instruments, thermal cyclers, scanning equipment etc, with leading brands such as Hamilton, Illumina, Tecan, Roche, Autogen and ThermoFisher represented.

This position requires a highly collaborative individual who enjoys being part of a dynamic team and can work with scientific and technical colleagues across all levels of the company. The ability to think in an analytical and creative way and to communicate in a positive and professional manner are critical to success in this position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participate in the design of complex liquid handling and automation methods for walk-away execution
  • Introduce and drive the implementation of these user friendly, pre-programmed applications for the execution of complex sample preparation protocols across the following areas:
    • DNA/RNA isolation and QC
    • Pre-PCR – Multiple NGS library Preparation methods
    • Sequencing: Illumina, Oxford Nanopore and Sanger
    • Genotyping: various platform
  • Transition prototype methods into robust solutions for production
  • Develop tools and controls to make targeted improvements within workflows
  • Collect, collate and report data on platform reliability and individual instrument downtime
  • Perform routine maintenance as necessary and acts as a liaison between support engineers from key suppliers
  • Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed
  • Organise performance maintenance or services as required in conjunction with laboratory staff and project schedules
  • Provide training and documentation for new or modified workflows to end users where relevant
  • Comply with all applicable clinical laboratory standards, protocols and requirements
  • Develop technical documents such as SOP’s, change controls and support documents within the quality management system to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Monitor entire workflow performance and suggest efficiency improvements
  • Be motivated to continuously learn and develop skills on the job and through external training to maintain expertise on industry best practices and benchmark against current processes to ensure optimal performance in-house
  • Comply with all safety and infection control standards
  • Comply with the requirements of CAP, ISO15189 and Irish National Accreditation Board mandatory documentation
  • Perform other duties as required

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Science / Engineering or related scientific discipline
  • 2+ years of relevant automation experience and demonstration of capabilities with hardware/software in a relevant field
  • Experience working in a regulated accredited environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, following detailed work instructions and as part of a cohesive team
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise duties to meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills including written and verbal skills to accurately record and communicate experimental results and analyses
  • Organisational and time management skills are essential
  • Detail oriented and conscientious

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in NGS library preparation for WGS, Exome or RNA sequencing on Illumina Platforms
  • Experience with high sample throughput environments
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  • Experience in robotic method construction and/or testing
  • Experience in Working with Hamilton Automation and experience in method development using VENUS
