Laboratory Operations Director

This role will also be responsible for developing oncology related next-generation sequencing (NGS) panels for both tissue and ctDNA and other cutting-edge technologies such as single cell sequencing. The successful job candidate will also be part of an inter-laboratory operations team and have the responsibility of delivering commercial sequencing projects on time and within budget. This individual will also be involved in strategic planning, budgeting and technical development to support commercial projects.

Essential Functions

  • Manage and operate a fully functional clinical laboratory in compliance with CLIA and CAP regulations
  • Maintain CAP & CLIA compliance and promote a culture of continuous improvement in partnership with the clinical lab director and QA manager
  • Work in partnership with other WuXi NextCODE laboratories to ensure harmonized processes for logistics, sample tracking, sample processing, information systems and quality metrics
  • Lead the application and implementation of other regulatory standards as required by the business
  • Assist in the recruitment of a highly skilled team to support the laboratory operations
  • Manage the laboratory facilities with a plan to ensure sustained operational capabilities and business continuity
  • Develop and report key efficiency metrics that provide oversight of laboratory performance
  • Assist in the development of IT and bioinformatic infrastructure that can support data analysis and reporting pipelines for internal and external requirements
  • Work with commercial genomic platform partners to gain early access to innovative genomics applications and optimize these methods for customer’s needs
  • Work with the commercial and operation’s team to support industrial, pharmaceutical and academic customers by writing and presenting technical proposals and laboratory-based data
  • Ensure the completion of commercial projects according the set timelines and costs.
  • Develop and be accountable for the laboratory operational budget
  • Attendance at meetings, as requested by senior management
  • Maintaining the confidentiality and data privacy processes of WuXi NextCODE corporate and laboratories
  • Adherence with human resources policies and procedures and participation in staff review programs within the organization

Required Education and Experience

  • PhD/MSc or equivalent in Biology, Life Sciences, or related field
  • 10+ years of industrial research and technical experience in the fields of genomics; genetic analysis using variety of NGS platforms
  • Proven track record of managing laboratory teams and operations within an accredited environment
  • Proven experience working with commercial and operational teams required
  • Experience working in clinically accredited laboratories (oncology experience preferred)
  • Willingness to keep the pace with cutting edge genomic applications using NGS technologies
  • Experience with automation for NGS required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential for internal alignment and interacting with external customers
  • Experience in the technical service industry is preferred
